JANUARY - APRIL 2000
Easter in Korthi: Don't miss
visiting Tromarchia Monastery on Easter Monday (May 1st), which this
year coincides with Labor Day (Protomagia), to have fun in an
authentic traditional festival. Like every year the thousands of
visitors will dance with the music of traditional instruments. The
impressive old furnace will be working non-stop and there will be
plenty of local wine. The Municipality of Korthi, participating in
this festival, will donate lambs. The majestic view of the Aegean Sea
and the sunset will keep you refreshed till the morning. There will be
a festival at Ag. Georgios in Farali too, under green plane-trees and
the sound of running waters. And if on Easter Sunday afternoon you are
in Ormos, don't forget to watch, or even better participate in, "tsounia",
an old local game, which remains unchanged up to this day.
General Elections 2000: All the results from Andros island. Results
from previous elections too.
Mistral Youth World Championships may still look distant, but
the preparations are continuing at a fast pace. This big event, to be
held in Korthi area, requires serious and systematic work. The upgrade
of Korthi area is continuing, while many people from around the world
are already asking information on the event and on accommodation
Sewage treatment plant of Chora -
Waste disposal plant: At the meeting which took place in Chora,
with the presence of the Regional Director of South Aegean, the views
of the Municipality of Korthi on these matters were repeated.
Specifically, it became clear that the Municipality of Korthi wishes
the construction of the sewage treatment plant of Chora. It is a big
project, a necessity in the island and its future development. But it
is clear that the Municipality of Chora, as the sole responsible for
this project, will bear the full responsibility, if with wrong
decisions this project is lost and consequently one third of the
budget (3rd European Union framework support) for our island. As
far as the waste disposal plant is concerned, it is the position of
the Municipality of Korthi that it is not possible to obstruct the
continuing process to find a solution (no matter how many problems are
encountered), especially now that it is coming to an end.
5-4-2000: Works in progress: Trying to cope with the water supply issue of the Municipality, which becomes urgent due to the continuing drought, a water drill was made at a place between Ormos and Korthi. In this way the increasing needs will be covered and especially this summer, because of the 2000 Mistral Youth World Championships and the expected visitors. Also, the works for upgrading the area are continuing, while studies for the remaining ones are being made, so everything will be ready for the big summer event.
The directors of Secondary and
Technological Education for Kyklades Prefecture, Mr. Sarantinos
and Mr. Fakorelis, as well as the responsible of Physical Sciences Mr.
Makrionitis and the responsible of the Advisory Conduct Offices
Ms. Petridou, visited our island. Their purpose was to be informed and
take a close look at the problems the schools are facing and to
discuss with the teachers on these matters. Following this framework
they visited the Secondary School and the Technical School of Korthi.
After the discussions that followed, it became clear that they were
well informed of all the problems related with the functioning of the
schools. From their position they are always trying to solve emerging
problems, but the final decisions are made, as usual, from central
administration, which has not yet shown sensitivity for the islands
and their special characteristics.
The official presentation of two publications of the Municipality
of Korthi was made on Saturday, April 1st, in a special event at
the Kifisia Cultural Center in Athens. "Gefyres"
(bridges), in reference of the Symposium organized last summer in
Korthi and "Routes in Korthi", a tour of southern
Andros, are two publications with the aim to promote the area and give
a reference point of a future development, of culture and mild
tourism. In a crowded hall Mayor I. Glynos analysed the vision and the
prospects of the development of our area, applauded by all attendants.
Art critic Athina Schina presented the first publication, "Gefyres",
while Magnolia Skouloudi, representing the Symposium artists, gave the
artistic view. Present were the greek artists, the Mayor of Kifisia,
Mr. Varsos, who kindly offered the hall of the cultural center, the
Mayor of Dionysos Mr. Sotiriou, the president of the Municipal Council
of Kifisia, the general director of VIPETVA (public company in charge
of Dipotamata project, which has a budget of 1.5 billion drs), Mr.
Panagiotakis representing the political party "Coalition of the
Left and Progress", journalists from Athens and local press and
of course lots of people.

and were informed of its particular characteristics. In a special
event, held on Saturday, March 25th, selected environmental studies,
made by students of the two schools, were presented. The meeting,
sponsored by the Municipality of Korthi, concluded with a visit at the
Andros archeological museum and in Panachrantou monastery.
